Lockheed Martin’s Annual “Code Quest” Encourages Students to Explore Careers in Coding, Software, STEM

More than 2,000 high-school students visited Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) facilities across the globe on Saturday to compete in the company’s Code Quest computer programming competition.

Don’t Recline Behind the Wheel: High School Student from St. Petersburg, Fla. Wins National PSA Video Challenge

To encourage positive driving habits for young drivers, Shorecrest Preparatory School junior, Caleb Kravitz developed a creative PSA to inspire his peers to practice safe driving skills. His video, titled Don’t Recline Behind the Wheel, is the winner of the Toyota TeenDrive365 Video Challenge, a national peer-to-peer driver safety public service announcement competition. More than a thousand videos were submitted in the TeenDrive365 Video Challenge by teens educating students on the risky behavior of distracted driving.

Ceres Applauds U.S. House Leaders for Bill to Keep U.S. in the Paris Agreement

The sustainability nonprofit organization Ceres applauds the U.S. House of Representatives for bringing to a vote a new bill aimed at keeping the U.S. as a participant in the historic Paris Agreement on climate change. This will be the first climate bill to be voted on in the U.S. House in the last 10 years.

Construction Practices For A Sustainable Future

The inputs into major projects are as important as the output. In other words, the “how” we build is as important as “what” we build. A full spectrum analysis of inputs like the materials, personnel, and equipment for a major project is an essential step toward identifying new opportunities to drive sustainability, reduce costs, and improve quality. The industry is already embracing innovation like design thinking, testing, and deploying enhanced processes and new technologies. For example, supply chain innovations such as 3-D printing or additive manufacturing could yield significant savings by reducing the need for excessive procurement of material and moving manufacturing on-site.

Tom Hess has worked with many companies during his 28-year career as an environmental inspector.

In many cases, Hess has experienced clients who tolerate his environmental recommendations, or do only what’s required — often with pressure. Thus, Hess wasn’t sure what to expect when he proposed spending extra money to restore construction areas on a major natural gas pipeline project for Michigan-based Consumers Energy. He suggested using seed mix containing native grasses and wildflowers to attract bees, butterflies and other pollinators losing habitat across the country.

Reengaging the Hispanic Workforce Through Innovation

A recent Bureau of Labor Statistics report indicated that across all employment types and demographics fatal work injuries have decreased from 5,190 in 2016 to 5,147 in 2017, and the numbers of fatalities in construction and extraction occupation have fallen from 970 to 965. However, fatalities among Hispanic and Latino workers have increased from 879 to 903 over the same time span.

The National Hispanic Entrepreneurs’ Organization (NHEO) Institute is a non-profit leading the Building a Safer Future campaign that tackles this issue by providing support to local communities and corporations among Hispanic workers.
