May 7, 2015 /3BL Media/ - To bring awareness to the country’s largest single day food drive,  Valpak will feature  the Stamp Out Hunger food drive sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers on 36 million blue envelopes this month,  reminding consumers to donate non-perishable food items to help support families that need assistance.

The food drive will be held Saturday, May 9, with letter carriers throughout the nation once again picking up bags of donated food from the communities they serve.

“Letter carriers are in the neighborhoods every day and they see the families, children and senior citizens that need help,” said Michael Vivio, president of Cox Target Media and Valpak. “We encourage the public to make a difference and donate items to help  food pantries around the country  feed families  that face food insecurity,” said Vivio.

Valpak has promoted the campaign for 12 years now to support the NALC and the work they do delivering Valpak envelopes to households each month. Other companies sponsoring the campaign include United Way, Feeding America, United States Postal Service, the National Rural Letter Carriers Association and the AFL-CIO.

Last year, the NALC Stamp Out Hunger food drive collected 72.5 million pounds in non-perishable donations.

Hunger affects about 49 million people around the country, including millions of children and senior citizens.  The NALC food drive first began when letter carriers started seeing the need in the neighborhoods they served. Because many children receive support from school programs, families are affected when children are out of school for the summer. In addition, food bank supplies are usually depleted by late spring when donations received during Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays are long gone.

Valpak encourages the public to participate by filling up a bag (or more) with items such as soup, cereal, peanut butter, rice, canned fruits and vegetables, canned protein such as tuna, chicken and turkey and other non-perishable items.

Valpak franchisees across the country are getting involved, too, using Valpak specially marked inserts to help raise awareness; and are serving as drop-off locations and organizing volunteer efforts in their communities.
