Shorty Social Good Awards Recognize 21CF and National Geographic for Social Media Campaigns That Make a Difference
21st Century Fox and National Geographic took home top honors at the second annual Shorty Social Good Awards on November 15 for developing social media campaigns that engage audiences on important social issues and empower them to take action. The winning campaigns included 21CF’s contest to award free screenings of Hidden Figures to communities across America, as well as initiatives from Nat Geo to encourage women in STEM, expand access to clean water, and inspire the genius in each of us. The Shorty Social Good Awards launched in 2016 to celebrate the power of digital storytelling tools to raise awareness and make change.

Fox’s ‘Hidden Figures’ Inspires Historic State Department Program to Support Women in STEM Around the World
As part of an ongoing effort to encourage women and girls to pursue careers in the STEM fields, 21st Century Fox worked with the U.S. Department of State on a unique educational exchange program inspired by the Fox 2000 film Hidden Figures. The program, Hidden No More, brought 48 women from 48 different countries, each of whom are STEM leaders in their home countries, to the United States this October for a three-week tour of American organizations making strides to support women in STEM. Hidden No More marks the first time in the history of the State Department that a Hollywood movie has led to the creation of a publicly funded education exchange program.

Nat Geo Photo Ark EDGE Fellowships Will Train Conservationists to Protect Animal Species at Risk of Extinction
The National Geographic Society and the Zoological Society of London have launched a new wildlife conservation program to protect lesser-known animal species at risk of extinction. The Nat Geo Photo Ark EDGE Fellowships will support on-the-ground efforts to save some of the creatures featured in the National Geographic Photo Ark, Joel Sartore’s ongoing project to photograph every animal species in human care. Fellows will train with National Geographic and ZSL on essential conservation skills, as well as storytelling strategies that will help raise awareness of the global extinction crisis.

National Geographic Announces Winners of ‘Chasing Genius’, a Global Call for Transformational Ideas to Improve the Well-Being of Our People and Planet
21st Century Fox’s National Geographic recently announced the winners of Chasing Genius, a digital community launched in June with GSK Consumer Healthcare. Nat Geo and GSK crowdsourced ideas from their audiences and chose three critical areas where transformational ideas could mobilize change and help advance the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals: making our planet more sustainable, improving global health, and kickstarting our ability to feed 9 billion people in the world. Nat Geo’s Emmy-nominated show, “Genius”, was a catalyst for the project’s creation—directed by Academy Award winners Brian Grazer and Ron Howard, the show chronicles Albert Einstein’s life through stories about his friends, lovers, enemies, and fellow scientific luminaries.

“Hidden Figures” made history when it became one of the highest grossing films of 2016 putting it ahead of blockbuster films including “La La Land,” “Star Trek Beyond,” and “X-Men: Apocalypse.” Now, in addition to its box office wins and awards season accolades, the film is continuing to make history by inspiring a new educational exchange program for women in STEM.

Nat Geo Reporters Win 2017 Society of Environmental Journalists Awards for Beat Reporting on Effects of Climate Change and Illegal Wildlife Trading
From a pool of nearly 400 submissions, the Society of Environmental Journalists (SEJ) recently announced the winners of the 2016-17 Awards for Reporting on the Environment, and two awards went to 21st Century Fox’s National Geographic reporters, Craig Welch and Rachel Nuwer, for their important work in illuminating pressing issues of climate change and the human impact of wild animal welfare around the world.

21st Century Fox’s National Geographic is now accepting submissions for Chasing Genius, a new digital community developed in partnership with GSK Consumer Healthcare based on the idea that global change can come from anyone and anywhere. The platform is inspired by Genius, Nat Geo’s first scripted series produced by Academy Award winners Brain Grazer and Ron Howard, which premiered in April and chronicles Albert Einstein’s life through stories about his friends, lovers, enemies, and fellow scientific luminaries.

Fox Makes Free ‘Hidden Figures’ Curriculum Guides Available for Classroom Discussions on Relevant Social Issues, Past and Present
Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has partnered with the nonprofit Journeys in Film to release a free Hidden Figures curriculum guide for the classroom.

Hidden Figures—starring Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monáe—tells the 'untold' story of three African American female NASA mathematicians during the Space Race of the 1960's, and was nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and Best Supporting Actress for Octavia Spencer’s portrayal of Dorothy Vaughan. The powerful story behind Hidden Figures has made waves around the world and is encouraging young women, especially young women of color, to follow their dreams and pursue studies and careers in STEM.
