In the midst of World War II, the makeup of the U.S. workforce changed. Companies refrained from producing their usual goods to focus on war production. For example, in the Brass Department at Kohler Co., associates made artillery shells, submarine torpedo tubes and aircraft controls in place of bathroom brass fittings. The associates making those items changed, too.

Addressing Barriers for Women Leaders: Reducing Gender Bias

In 1948 the United Nations General Assembly adopted the landmark Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the first global recognition that there are basic inalienable rights and fundamental freedoms that apply to every human being. The Declaration made clear that men and women have the same rights to basic civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights. In the 69 years since then, we’ve made more strides towards gender equality but there is much more work to do in eliminating barriers for women across all aspects of society, including the workplace.

The company has incorporated diversity and inclusion into its values and primary business systems and processes. Fifty-one percent of the company’s 75,000 employees are women. In management, about 43 percent of employees are women. Additionally, the company has been recognized for gender diversity amongst its board of directors by the Women’s Forum of New York.
