Beginning June 17, 2021, Researchers’ World at Mill River Park will offer free workshops, introducing students to the concepts of sustainability, consumption, recycling, materials science and more.
For better or worse, technology is pervasive in the workplace, school and home. All industries depend on computers to maintain our quality of life, and many tech companies continue to experiment and invest in new technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) at an accelerated rate. The projected growth of unfilled STEM careers is old news to employers and educators alike as we face the facts of the future - today.
On the eve of the premiere of One Strange Rock, the thrilling 10-part documentary series exploring the conditions that create life on Earth, 21st Century Fox’s National Geographic has launched a suite of educational tools designed to bring to life some of the series’ key scientific lessons. The resources are available completely free for educators and include activities for students of all ages, including interactive online games and maps, photography, videos, slideshows, worksheets, articles, and a curriculum guide developed in collaboration with the nonprofit Journeys in Film. One Strange Rock premieres on Monday, March 26, at 10/9c on National Geographic.
Recognizing the need to continue developing students today for tomorrow’s workforce, SC Johnson is proud to support education through its philanthropic contributions, a portion of which includes science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs worldwide.
Digital innovation is one of the most exciting opportunities of our time. It seems like the futuristic depictions that once felt fictitious are quickly becoming reality. We can video call on our watches, cars can drive themselves, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) help us find victims amidst fire and rubble, and a virtual global office brings colleagues across the world together in a click.
“People used to even make jokes about me because I asked so many questions,” says Kennedy Sampson, now a high school junior in Maryland. “But I needed to understand it …I had to do what I had to.” Kennedy’s determination and grit makes her a good candidate to succeed in math. Her voice was among more than 6,000 U.S. girls and women from ages 10 to 30 who were interviewed for a newly released study about STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education.
Happy Pi Day! Pi Day is celebrated on 3/14 around the world. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.141592. Pi has been calculated to over one trillion digits beyond its decimal point.
Today is a celebration of math and continuous measurement and movement. In honor of Women’s History Month, we sat down with three JetBlue crewmembers in math and technology-related careers who keep our airline moving non-stop. From figuring out JetBlue’s flight times and IT problem solving to buying airplanes, these women help fuel the airline.
Maintaining students' interest in science during the middle school years is crucial to increasing the likelihood they'll pursue STEM careers. That's important, since studies show our nation will need to produce an additional one million STEM workers between 2012 and 2022 alone.
In my role at JetBlue, I see firsthand how important science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) are to shaping future generations of leaders. Most of the critical functions of JetBlue require STEM, including aircraft flight, repair, and routing.
Yet the aviation industry still lacks women in technical and analytical positions, a trend that is seen throughout the aviation sector. Women pilots, for instance, represent less than 7% of the commercial pilot population, and women represent less than 3% of all mechanics, according to 2015 data from the Federal Aviation Administration.
In celebration of Women’s History Month, JetBlue would like to bring attention to the great work being done by the Rwandan Girls Initiative (RGI) whose mission is to educate and empower girls of Rwanda to reach their highest potential. JetBlue was recently introduced to RGI through our inflight entertainment partners - The Nantucket Project (TNP). Last fall, the JetBlue Foundation helped fly several women from RGI to Nantucket for the TNP annual gathering.
