Whole Kids Foundation announced today that it has awarded Bee Hive Grants to two schools in Washington, D.C. with money raised from the inaugural Give Bees a Chance campaign held this summer. Grant recipients include District of Columbia International School and Hearst Elementary School. Each school will receive support for an educational bee hive on campus, providing students with learning opportunities around science, ecology, nutrition, business and agriculture learning opportunities.
Ghana’s Volta Region has the lowest quality of education in the country. Girls are particularly affected by lack of education facilities, with enrollment dropping from 62 percent in primary school to only 8 percent in secondary school.
I’m particularly cognizant of this today as we launch our 2018 Corporate Social Responsibility Report. This is a big change from the first CSR Report that I stewarded and co-authored in 2005. Like any first-generation product, there was a great room for improvement. In 2000, Techbridge Girls (TBG) - a leader in supporting girls and marginalized communities in breaking into the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields - was launched at the Chabot Space & Science Center in Oakland, California. As STEM fields have historically been dominated by males, women and girls, especially those of color, are consistently and disproportionately left out and often lack information on the multitude of STEM career opportunities available to them. In 2015, Subaru began funding TBG’s after school programs in Seattle, WA, and has since become a national supporter of all three TBG direct service locations.

A new report from the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) made possible by The Allstate Foundation, shows 77 percent of recent high school students believe their schools could have done a better job of helping students develop key social and emotional learning (SEL) skills. Crucial SEL skills, such as empathy and confidence, can have an overwhelmingly positive impact on academic performance and overall well-being.
