Long Island Students Win Top Water Innovation Prize

Two childhood friends have won the top prize at the 2017 Stockholm Junior Water prize sponsored by Xylem. Ryan Thorpe and Rachel Chang, seniors at Manhasset Secondary School on Long Island, N.Y., have created a system that uses biosensors to detect individual colonies of four of the most common pathogenic bacteria found in water, paving the way for applications in regions where clean water is a luxury.

Essity and the Philadelphia Eagles Team up to Encourage Proper Handwashing With Free Posters for Regional Schools

A series of two posters were created feature Eagles Cornerback Jalen Mills, Eagles mascot SWOOP, and two local children, taking the steps to properly wash and dry their hands with a paper towel, with the messages, ‘Clean Hands Make Healthy Fans!’ and ‘Wash. Dry. Fly, Eagles, Fly!’ Jalen Mills’ jersey number is 31, and students are encouraged to wash their hands for 31 seconds. The posters are free and will be made available to schools in the Delaware Valley region.

VSP Vision Care and Prevent Blindness Launch ‘Clicks for Kids’ to Enhance Access to Vision Screenings and Eye Exams for Head Start Children

Healthy vision is essential to a child’s ability to learn, play sports or carry out daily tasks, and receiving eye care early on can help to detect problems that could impair eyesight for life. VSP Vision Care and Prevent Blindness launched Vision to Share: ‘Clicks for Kids' as a way to help bridge the gap in access to care for a population whose need for eye care is often unmet. With every click or share, VSP will donate $1, up to $20,000 in total, so that Head Start children ages 3, 4, and 5 years old, in 25 underserved communities across the United States, have increased access to vision screenings and comprehensive eye examinations, and treatment as needed before they enter school.
