Dr. Yulsi Lili Fernandez Montero grew up in a medically underserved community like Compton, California, and knew she wanted to practice medicine in a similar community when she finished medical school. Today she is a family medicine and addiction medicine doctor practicing with the MLK Community Medical Group in Compton. However, she said the decision to practice in this type of community can be difficult for many doctors.

Hunger Relief Agencies in 14 States Receive $1.8 Million in Support From Tyson Foods

As part of Tyson Foods’ (NYSE: TSN) ongoing efforts to address food insecurity in its communities, the company announced today $1.8 million in new hunger relief grants. Twenty Feeding America® member food banks and other community hunger relief agencies in 14 states were awarded grants to enhance access to nutritious food and combat hunger. The investments represent approximately five million pounds of food or the equivalent of 20 million servings

Using Sunlight to Lower Bills for Low- to Moderate-Income Families

It’s important to Monica Sirri to cook for her family — including her three adult children and four grandchildren — when they visit every weekend. “It’s the main thing to stay together,” Sirri said. “I have proof, because they love me and stay with me.” But she feels bad that she has to ask her family to not turn on the air conditioning during extreme temperatures in their Van Nuys, California, home. “It’s hard for us to pay in the summer and winter, but we need air conditioning and lights,” she said. And it’s even harder since Sirri’s husband has a disability and Sirri has gone from working full time to part time so that she can take care of him.

To mark the first day of spring and celebrate the start of the gardening season, The Scotts Miracle-Gro Foundation today announced the recipients of the 2019 Gro More Good Grassroots Grants with KidsGardening. 175 school and nonprofit organizations across the United States were awarded funding to create or enhance their youth garden programs.
