By the time they reach middle school, students from upper-income families have likely spent 6,000 more hours learning than students from lower-income families. Citizen Schools aims to close that gap by partnering with middle schools in underserved communities and providing students opportunities to learn new skills, discover new careers and pursue new dreams.
The imperative to accurately and effectively communicate is born from the moment the corporate social responsibility program is established. To many, it’s just an empty soda or beer can that needs to be thrown away or a dirty paper plate from taco night. Sometimes it’s just a bunch of empty boxes from the big move or old newspapers someone forgot to read. To many people in the Canyon County area, these items are just junk taking up space and needing to be thrown away. But to anyone working in the recycling centers in Nampa, Caldwell and Boise, that junk is a valuable resource.
One in four Texans lives at or below the poverty level; for children, it's nearly one in three. More than 6.3 million Texans - including 1.2 million children - lack health insurance. The uninsured are up to four times less likely to have a regular source of health care and are more likely to die from health-related problems. Related to communicable diseases, it is estimated that 1 in 4 children living in Texas go without all the necessary immunizations to lead healthy, happy lives due to a lack of affordability and access to medical care. Finally, lacking a medical home, most often uninsured people tend to look for health care in the emergency room, the most expensive setting they could possibly choose.

To track down rhinoceros and kill them is illegal, yet unfortunately a lucrative business model in South Africa. Sporting helicopters, silenced weapons and night vision scopes, the poachers come well equipped to claim their brutal prize. Just a single horn nets thousands of dollars on the black market. Ground into powder the horn allegedly is a miracle remedy for fever or even cancer and is said to increase male potency. Especially in Asia the horn of a rhino is also a treasured status symbol.

Adult coloring books are the rage. In the last few months the American Art Therapy Association has received many media inquires about the value of coloring books for adults as a self-care hobby for stress management. Some consumers and media have asked us about the difference between at-home coloring or for that matter any engagement with art on a private basis, and the art therapy profession. They are indeed separate topics with one commonality, that art making in and of itself is personally rewarding and potentially therapeutic. The American Art Therapy Association supports the use of coloring books for pleasure and self-care, however these uses should not be confused with the delivery of professional art therapy services, during which a client engages with a credentialed art therapist.
