Community Partners Spotlight: Citizen Schools

By the time they reach middle school, students from upper-income families have likely spent 6,000 more hours learning than students from lower-income families. But this critical gap in education isn’t an achievement gap, it’s an opportunity gap. Citizen Schools aims to close that gap by partnering with middle schools in underserved communities and providing students opportunities to learn new skills, discover new careers and pursue new dreams.

Crafting the Message in Corporate Social Responsibility Communications

The imperative to accurately and effectively communicate is born from the moment the corporate social responsibility program is established. Communicating the effort, both internally among key stakeholders and externally outside the walls of the corporation to the myriad of those external audiences that can make the program a success or failure, deserves both attention to detail and an allocation of financial resources in the CSR program budget.

Western Recycling: Repurposing Can Mean More Jobs, Smaller Landfill

To many, it’s just an empty soda or beer can that needs to be thrown away or a dirty paper plate from taco night. Sometimes it’s just a bunch of empty boxes from the big move or old newspapers someone forgot to read. To many people in the Canyon County area, these items are just junk taking up space and needing to be thrown away. Building a Healthier, Happier Future for Children Through Corporate Giving Programs

One in four Texans lives at or below the poverty level; for children, it's nearly one in three. More than 6.3 million Texans - including 1.2 million children - lack health insurance. The uninsured are up to four times less likely to have a regular source of health care and are more likely to die from health-related problems. Related to communicable diseases, it is estimated that 1 in 4 children living in Texas go without all the necessary immunizations to lead healthy, happy lives due to a lack of affordability and access to medical care. Finally, lacking a medical home, most often uninsured people tend to look for health care in the emergency room, the most expensive setting they could possibly choose.

We Need to Empower Everyone to Tackle Water Issues

As we enjoy the last of summer, I find myself reflecting on the last few months with bittersweet memories. While swimming in the Pacific Ocean and sailing on Lake Champlain, Vermont, I have enjoyed the best our water resources have to offer.
