UN Global Compact Announces Two New Board Members Appointed by the UN Secretary-General

The United Nations Global Compact is pleased to announce today two new Members to its Board, appointed by UN Secretary-General António Guterres. Dr. Musimbi Kanyoro, President and CEO, Global Fund for Women and Mr. Anand Mahindra, Chairman, Mahindra Group join more than 20 other members on the UN Global Compact Board, which is chaired by the UN Secretary-General.

For any mining operation, effective wastewater treatment to remove contaminants is an indispensable step needed to minimize environmental impacts and maintain the mine’s social license to operate. When elevated concentrations of ammonia and residual cyanide by-products were detected in mill effluent at Éléonore in 2014, the mill and environmental team took decisive action by introducing a novel wastewater treatment process that rectified the problem and secured Éléonore a Global Excellence Award for Sustainability Stewardship.

Today is Global Recycling Day, a time for us all to step up our individual recycling efforts and to press our business, community and government leaders to expand their recycling infrastructure. Only 20 percent of the world’s e-waste is recycled, according to the United Nations. When electronics products are improperly disposed in landfills or incinerated, this can harm the environment and human health. As an electronics producer, Dell has a responsibility to recover, reuse and recycle our products when they’ve reached the end of their useful life for our customers.
