This global award is presented annually by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) to an individual, organization or institution for outstanding water-related achievements during World Water Week which is celebrated August 28 – September 2.

Lockheed Martin Recognized as Best-in-Class on Dow Jones Sustainability Index
For the third year in a row, the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI) has recognized Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] as best-in-class in the area of corporate sustainability. This distinction is only given to the top 10 percent of the largest 2,500 companies in the S&P Global Broad Market Index based on long-term environmental, social and economic benchmarks. Lockheed Martin is the only North American prime defense contractor included on the World Index.
Newmont Ranked Mining Industry Leader by Dow Jones Sustainability World Index for Second Year in a Row
For the second year in a row, Newmont Mining Corporation (NYSE: NEM) was ranked by the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World) as the mining industry’s overall leader in sustainability. Newmont’s inclusion on the index also marked the 10th consecutive year the company has been selected for the DJSI World. This year, the DJSI World – one of the most highly regarded sustainability indices – included 316 global companies identified as leaders in the areas of sustainable economic, environmental and social performance. Newmont was the first gold company named to the index in 2007, and has been included on the DJSI North America Index every year since 2006.

Medtronic plc (NYSE: MDT) was recognized today as one of the world's leading companies for sustainability with its ranking on the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index (DJSI North America) for the ninth consecutive year. DJSI North America analyzes companies on a variety of sustainability criteria, including economic performance, environmental stewardship and social responsibility. This adds to the recognition Medtronic received earlier this year through its continued inclusion in the FTSE4Good Index Series.

I represent Generation Z, a generation that spent our childhood taking care of virtual pets on Neopets and playing Pokémon Yellow on a Gameboy. We made Facebook accounts in middle school, as Facebook Memories likes to continuously remind us. We watched our parents cry during the terror attacks on the World Trade Center. We experienced “The Great Recession” firsthand. We saw millions of gallons of oil pour into the Gulf of Mexico. We witnessed our siblings terrified to go to school the day after the Columbine Shooting.

Pulp and paper products make modern life possible. From the obvious items like writing paper to not-so-obvious products like baby diapers, you can find forest-based fiber in so many everyday things. While we can probably find paper products at every turn in our daily routines, we don’t always have the same amount of insight into where they come from or why things like sustainable forestry and recycling make a real-life impact.
