The NutroCompany, a division of Mars Petcare based in Franklin, Tennessee, partnered with the Meals on Wheels organization to address malnourishment in homebound senior citizens and their furry companions through a program called “AniMeals-on-Wheels.”

Meals on Wheels was the perfect partner in this endeavour as the program delivers healthy meals to seniors in 11 counties.

Nutro Associates and Meals on Wheels delivered meals to more than 180 homebound seniors, along with a six-month supply of pet food and a petsupply kit for each of their pets. The Nutro Company had 100 per cent volunteer participation involving around 160 employees, providing more than 250 hours to the Meals on Wheels program and contributing more than 15,000 pounds of pet food. In total, volunteers provided 300 pet supply kits, 102 goodie bags with personal care items for the seniors, 82 candy bags for weekly Meals on Wheels volunteers and 232 holiday cards for the seniors, as well as delivering 500 meals to homebound senior citizens and their pets.

Kim Owen, a quality and food safety scientist at Nutro said, “Our company was founded on five principles, and that includes responsibility and mutuality. It provides a better world for pets and a responsibility to their owners as well.”

The Nutro Company’s AniMeals-on-Wheels program which was part of the Mars Volunteer Program in October was recently featured in the Tennessean newspaper.
