SAN JOSE, Calif. /3BL Media/ – Dec. 17, 2015 – In partnership with locally based nonprofit Citizen Schools California, McRoskey Mattress Company is supporting education programs geared toward middle school youth. The mattress company’s support of two of the nonprofit’s programs will directly impact 100 students at Joseph George Middle School in San Jose, Calif. This funding was generated through participation in CBS EcoMedia’s EducationAd program.

A member of the national nonprofit Citizen Schools, Citizen Schools California serves school youth in the Greater Bay Area, collaborating with AmeriCorps members and working, corporate professional volunteers to expand the learning day in low-income communities and introduce students to real-world learning projects and unique apprenticeships. Currently serving 800 students in grades 6 through 8, Citizen Schools California successfully partners with four middle schools in Oakland and San Jose.

McRoskey Mattress Company’s funding will bring apprenticeship opportunities to students at Joseph George Middle School, offering semester-long, experiential learning on a range of topics including Android app design, mock trial, gardening and 3D printing. Additionally, McRoskey’s classroom sponsorship will provide mentorship, academic coaching, and field trip opportunities to colleges, universities and corporate workplaces for students.

To celebrate this partnership, McRoskey Mattress Company was recognized at Joseph George Middle School’s end-of-semester WOW! event. The WOW! is a school showcase and celebration where students who have participated in 10-week apprenticeships get to show teachers, parents and community members what they’ve learned during the semester. Attendees included Robin McRoskey Azevedo, CEO at McRoskey Mattress Company; Maria Drake, Executive Director at Citizen Schools California; and local CBS television station KPIX.

“Our program is special because of the partnerships with corporations and organizations like McRoskey Mattress Company,” said Maria Drake, Executive Director for Citizen Schools in California. “Our name ‘Citizen Schools’ comes from the strong relationship between our volunteer ‘Citizen Teachers,’ partner schools and mission-driven staff. Closing the education and opportunity gap could not be done without the support of people like Robin Azevedo and her McRoskey family.”

“McRoskey Mattress Company is proud to sponsor Citizen Schools California’s enhanced education efforts that focus on the middle school student, introducing life work possibilities as these students prepare for high school and beyond,” said Robin McRoskey Azevedo, CEO at McRoskey Mattress Company.

“We are grateful to McRoskey Mattress for their support of Citizen Schools California,” said Paul Polizzotto, President and Founder of CBS EcoMedia. “Thanks to McRoskey’s support, youth at Joseph George Middle School have the opportunity to take part in semester-long, experiential learning they would not typically have access to.”
