This month we introduce you to Lori Smargiassi, Environment Health and Safety Engineer at Lockheed Martin Corp., one of the members who helps make our network so unique.

Why did you join NAEM?

I joined NAEM to take advantage of the opportunities that a large association of my peers can offer such as networking, seminars and conferences. This allows me to enhance my understanding of technical subjects and gain valuable lessons learned from others in the ESH field.

What are you currently working on?

I currently represent corporate Energy, Environment, Safety and Health (EESH) in two totally different arenas. I am the corporate EESH Subject Matter Expert for our Chemical Management Program and also represent EESH interests on all due diligence, real estate, and Merger and Acquisition projects.

What do you like about your job?

Working at the corporate level of my organization allows me to interact with my business area peers to assist them in solving challenges that they face. I support many sites which are diverse in nature and I enjoy trying to provide them with enterprise solutions or tools that can assist them no matter what the size or nature of their programs are. I engage with many different functional areas of the company such as supply chain, legal, and facilities, which brings a different perspective to the work that I am doing. I also have been able to see, first-hand, some really interesting products that our corporation offers to our customers.

What advice would you have for someone entering the field today?

Keep an open mind and accept projects outside of your comfort zone. Never stop learning and most of all have fun in whatever you choose to do.

What are the three words your spouse/colleagues/best friends would use to describe you?

Enthusiastic, Sincere and Diplomatic.

What aspect to the natural world/environment impresses you the most? Why?

I recently returned from a trip to the Grand Canyon and was totally in awe of the beauty that I experienced while there. It was a feeling like no other when I stood on the rim for the first time and overlooked the vast expanse of amazing and breathtaking scenery.

What do you like to do during your free time?

I enjoy anything where I can spend time outdoors. This includes gardening and cycling in the warmer months, skiing in the winter, and traveling at any time of the year!
