Translating Global Commitments Into Local Action
Symantec’s global commitments to the planet include engaging employees in protecting the environment and partnering with others to leverage our collective impact. Our Green Teams, employee volunteer teams located in offices across the world, help educate fellow employees about personal behavior changes that can save energy, water, reduce waste, and better the environment. Global Green Teams’ grassroots initiatives help us translate our global commitments into action.

Can We Reduce GHG Emissions by 60 Percent?
In 2016, we set a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) from our offices, data centers and small vehicle fleet (otherwise known as scope 1 and 2 emissions) by 30 percent by 2025. By focusing investments on energy conservation and more efficient use of space, Symantec achieved a 32 percent reduction in just three years, surpassing our goal seven years early.

Building on our success, we are participating in the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The SBTi, a collaboration between CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project), the UN Global Compact, World Resources Institute, and the World Wildlife Fund, champions science-based target setting as a powerful way of boosting companies’ competitive advantage in the transition to the low-carbon economy.

Thousands of Symantec Employees Take Action for a Sustainable Future
In 2018, thousands of Symantec employees globally partcipated in our year-long, Going Green in 2018 campaign to help create a more sustainable business and future. While company-wide challenges and initiatives were planned, in most cases "It's the Little Things" - those individual commitments, choices and actions - that each employee did that collectively made a significant and lasting impact.

Going Green for a More Sustainable Business and Future
A focus on the environment not only supports Symantec’s business objectives—it also contributes to the urgent action needed to combat global climate change and other environmental challenges. We launched the “Going Green in 2018” campaign to encourage employees to take part in our environmental sustainability efforts, while also learning about opportunities for individual actions.

The Evolution of Software Packaging
Symantec sells a lot of software. While we do sell hardware, our primary enterprise and consumer products come in software form. Today, the majority of Symantec software products come pre-installed on hardware or is downloaded electronically by customers, and thus requires no physical product or packaging materials.

Go Green This Holiday Season
The winter holiday season is here! In addition to pumpkin pie, cocoa, and holiday cheer, this time of year also brings more waste. From Thanksgiving to New Years Day, household waste increases by more than 25 percent and an additional one million tons of waste head to landfills each week.

Gift giving, traveling to see loved ones, and holiday decorations can strain the environment, and we have an opportunity to choose more planet-friendly ways to celebrate.

Every little thing counts! With just a few small changes, it’s easy to keep the holiday spirit while saving energy and natural resources.

Stepping Up Our Environmental Focus
Symantec is proud to be one of the twenty-one technology companies stepping up to rapidly reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across all sectors of society. We’ve joined the Step Up Declaration, a new alliance dedicated to harnessing the power of emerging technologies and the fourth industrial revolution to ensure a climate turning point by 2020.

As part of our commitment to climate action, we focused efforts around energy efficiency in our buildings as electricity use in our data centers, labs and offices account for more than 90 percent of these emissions. Buildings account for around 40 percent of global energy consumption, producing over a third of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Responsible Production & Consumption

Symantec Makes Sustainable Food Choices
At Symantec's cafe in Mountain View, California Executive Chef Robert Sapirman purchases cage-free eggs and sustainable seafood, sources locally, and supports the small farmers doing things right. This October, Symantec hosts its first Less Meet Monday to reduce GHG emissions and show diners how delicious plant-based proteins can be.

Responsible Business & Employee Engagement

Step Up 2020 Coalition
In 2016, Symantec committed to reducing its scope 1 and 2 emissions by 30% over a 10 year period (FY16 to FY25 with a FY15 baseline). We are pleased to share that we have met that goal 7 years early, having achieved in just 3 years a 32% reduction through investments in energy conservation, more efficient use of space, and a move to cleaner sources of energy to power our offices, labs, and data centers. Building on our success to date, we have set a new goal to reduce our scope 1 and 2 and scope 3 fuel and energy related emissions by a further 30% over the next 15 years (FY18 to FY33). At the Global Climate Action Summit, Symantec joined a collaboration of twenty one innovative, influential companies working to accelerate GHG emissions reductions across all sectors of society.
