MOHAWK GROUP | HANDPRINTS OVER FOOTPRINTS

As part of our commitment to believe in better, Mohawk Group has embarked on the journey of creating handprints over footprints through the Living Product Challenge. This International Living Future Institute (ILFI) program provides a framework for manufacturers to reimagine the design and construction of products to function as elegantly and efficiently as anything found in the natural world. With a full suite of Living Products across carpet and hard surface, Mohawk Group is setting a higher standard to help ensure products contribute to healthy spaces, are designed to inspire and will give more back to the environment than they take through unique “handprinting” initiatives.

Mohawk Group’s Sunweave Woven Broadloom Marries Best Practices of Past and Present
To offset the energy used to produce Sunweave, Mohawk engaged in a unique “handprinting” initiative, partnering with Virginia’s Hampton University to install 152 low-flow showerheads, equating to an annual water savings of approximately 4 million gallons. Mohawk has also partnered with Groundswell to ultimately install 10 smartflower™ solar systems at community centers and schools with STEM programs across the U.S. Mohawk is not only committed to bringing warmth back to commercial interiors through flooring products like Sunweave, but to leaving a lasting impact through meaningful initiatives and manufacturing practices that give more back to the environment than they take.

A Holistic Approach to Sustainability Through Handprinting
When the commercial division of the world’s largest flooring manufacturer switches its focus from “footprinting” to “handprinting” — or leaving the world in better shape than when we found it — it is not a small endeavor or one taken lightly.

We at Mohawk Group quickly realized that if we truly intended to pursue sustainability, it would require a sea change in our way of doing business, our manufacturing processes, our attitude from plant floor to boardroom, and our products. It would require committed leadership and putting to work all the innovation we had come to be so well known for. And it would mean every day, in every Mohawk facility around the globe, reinvigorating our promise to Believe in Better.

Nutopia Matrix: Mohawk Group's Latest Carpet Tile Influenced by Biophilia in City Centers
The Living Product Challenge Petal certified system is manufactured with a mix of heathered and solid Duracolor solution-dyed nylon yarns to emphasize depth of pattern. Carbon-neutral Nutopia Matrix features Mohawk Group’s newest generation of Red List-free carpet tile backing. Using advanced materials and patent-pending engineering, EcoFlex™ Matrix lowers environmental impact without sacrificing performance. The sustainable backing is dematerialized to use fewer raw materials and energy. It also simplifies floor preparation and installation, greatly reduces sub-floor moisture concerns, and is easier to ship and handle.

Sunweave Broadloom Carpet Weaves Textile Heritage with a Sustainable Future
In addition to checking many design and performance boxes for designers, Sunweave also earns points toward green certifications. The collection is Red List free and designed to achieve the stringent requirements of the Living Product Challenge Petal Certification.

“The Sunweave collection is going to be the first petal certified living product in the broadloom and area rug category,” says Jackie Dettmar, VP of design and product development for Mohawk Group.

Sunweave also contributes to the sustainability of a community. “We were so excited to look at creating a living product out of the Eden, N.C. plant,” Dettmar explains. “We really want to contribute to sustaining that wonderful mill where we’ve got people who have worked there for 40 and almost 50 years."

Our Nutopia carpet plank collection is designed to achieve petal certification by meeting stringent requirements for the Living Product Challenge. Created to transition across the floor or create defined areas in the built environment, Nutopia’s four styles can be used together as a cohesive system, or separately depending on the desired configuration, end use, and budget. Layouts can be subtle or vivid and dramatic – just like the dynamics of city life.
