Hurricane Katrina Showed Us We Can Do Better

Ten years ago, Hurricane Katrina hit the US Gulf Coast, leaving more than 1,300 people dead, forcing one million people from their homes and leaving 372,000 children without schools. Nobody was prepared for such devastation. In fact, it took seven months to reunite the last child with her family after thousands of children were reported missing. It was a true wake-up call for disaster preparedness and disaster relief across the US. At GSK, we realized there were things we could do to be better prepared.

CITGO Donation Funds New Playground for New Orleans Children

Today, New Orleans children are receiving a new playground in Eastshore Park as part of a donation from CITGO Petroleum Corporation to KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit dedicated to bringing balanced and active play into the daily lives of all kids. Nearly 100 volunteers from the New Orleans community and the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission (NORDC) are gathering to construct this playground – taking part in equipment assembly, painting, carpentry, gardening and more – two days before the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

Building on a 16-year partnership, Whirlpool Corporation today announced it will continue to provide a new range and refrigerator for every new Habitat for Humanity home in the U.S. in 2015, donating up to $5 million in products throughout the year. Whirlpool will also sponsor eight new home builds in partnership with families in need of affordable housing in the U.S.
