Closing the Skills Gap Through the East Community Learning Center Automotive Technology Center

One of the biggest challenges facing today’s workforce is the technical skills gap, partly created by a lack of accessible education opportunities for young professionals. To combat this challenge, Bridgestone and Firestone Complete Auto Care in collaboration with United Way of Summit County and Akron Public Schools (APS) developed the Bridgestone Academy of Applied Engineering and Technology which brought a Firestone Complete Auto Care (FCAC) to East Community Learning Center (CLC) in October 2018.

Gardening Gives the Kids of Migrant Workers a Head Start

When preschool teacher Tonya Langston first asked the children in her Bowling Green, Florida, classroom where milk came from, their response was: "the kitchen." When she asked them where a banana comes from, same answer: "the kitchen." Langston's students are young—3 or 4 years old—but because they're the children of professional migrant farmworkers, Langston and her fellow teachers wanted to teach them more about what their parents do, and why it's important. The East Coast Migrant Head Start Project is part of a nationwide program made possible by the Scotts Miracle-Gro Foundation, designed to help children and families living in at-risk communities access fresh, healthy food.

Lambton College Wins National Champion Title in Environmental Challenge

Students at Lambton College installed solar drip irrigation systems at schools in Zambia, Africa, providing a varied diet to students using clean, solar energy. Enactus Lambton College has been named the 2019 Scotiabank Environmental Challenge National Champion by this country’s largest student leadership development organization, Enactus Canada, and proud program supporter Scotiabank. The national competition took place at the 2019 Enactus Canada National Exposition in Vancouver.
