Jewelry Industry Moves Toward More Sustainable and Ethical Supply Chains

The jewelry industry has forged ahead with recent efforts to ensure gemstones and other jewelry products are sustainably sourced. Before the American Gem Trade Association’s annual conference kicks off in Tucson, hundreds of jewelers and others will gather on Jan. 29-30 for their second “Jewelry Industry Summit” to advance efforts for responsible sourcing of gemstones and to improve sustainability in the gem supply trade.

I Received an OSHA Citation--What Should I Do?

Let's say OSHA recently conducted a wall-to-wall inspection of your plant. During the close out conference, you were informed that your plant was in violation of certain OSHA standards. While the compliance officer (CO) does not have the authority to issue citations or penalties-- the final authority lies with the OSHA Area Director--the CO stated that, should OSHA choose to issue citations and financial penalties, you should expect correspondence within a few weeks.

After six long weeks of anxiously awaiting the final outcome of the inspection, the plant manager notifies you the results have arrived. The correspondence is handed off to you, which marks another first in your role as the new plant safety person.

A ‘Powerful’ Regeneration of the Battersea Power Station

The Battersea Power Station, one of London’s iconic “superstations” and the largest brick building in Europe, was, at its peak, a structure hailed for its distinct design and its ability to provide enough energy to power a resurgent London over the course of five decades. But since closing down in 1983, the building has been largely unused. Then, in 2012, a trio of Malaysian investors—SP Setia Berhad, Sime Darby Property and the Employees Provident Fund—purchased the property for £400 million, pledging to transform the Battersea Power Station not just into a sprawling multi-purpose destination, but into London’s hot new neighborhood.

Cargill’s Progress on Building Deforestation-Free Supply Chains Outlined in New Report

In a report issued today, Cargill presented progress on its efforts to meet its commitment to eliminate deforestation from its supply chains. The first Cargill Report on Forests covers on-the-ground actions within six priority supply chains and global collaborations to advance sustainable agriculture. Cargill worked with numerous global partners to engage more than 148,000 farmers and established a baseline for measuring tree cover loss by mapping the sourcing areas of nearly 2,000 locations across 14 countries.
