In response to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announcement today that current vehicle fuel economy and emission standards need to be weakened, Carol Lee Rawn, director of transportation at Ceres, which works with influential investors and Fortune 500 companies on sustainability issues, stated, “Major investors and businesses understand that rolling back the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) and emissions standards will undermine the global competitiveness of the U.S. auto industry at a time when the rest of the world is moving in the opposite direction, prioritizing clean vehicles and responding to consumer demand for cars that save them money.”
Consumers Energy recently completed construction of a $16 million concrete tank system to process and collect bottom ash at the Campbell generating plant on the shore of Lake Michigan near Holland. The five-tank system helps protect groundwater and promote beneficial reuse of about 50,000 tons of coal ash generated by Campbell’s three coal-fired units each year.

Keep America Beautiful, the nation’s iconic community improvement nonprofit organization, today announced the awarding of grant funding to 42 communities as part of its Cigarette Litter Prevention Program. Meet Hannah Testa, a 15 year-old environmental motivator from Georgia and founder of Hannah4Change. Testa has worked with the Georgia General Assembly for the past two years to recognize today, February 15, as Plastic Pollution Awareness Day in Georgia. The goal of the day is to educate Georgians about excessive plastic use and waste so they can make simple changes to reduce plastic pollution.
Bacardi Ltd. cited the 500 million estimate when it became one of the first spirits makers to take a stand against plastic straws and swizzle sticks, banning them two years ago from its events. A Bacardi spokeswoman says the initiative spares more than 1 million straws a year.

In late January, Virginia's James River was well above flood stage because of several weeks of rainy weather. But after 10-plus days of gorgeous weather, the James receded, and hundreds of volunteers flocked to Historic Tredegar for the 4th Annual Shiver in the River.
