Until recently, graduates wanting to serve in the Armed Forces have often had to put a civilian career on hold while they pursue their military career. Now Barclays Armed Forces Transition, Employment and Resettlement (AFTER) programme is championing a third option, doing both, with a bespoke entry process for university students who want to apply to the Barclays Graduate Programme and at the same time be part of the Reserves.

Reservists manage their Armed Forces careers alongside their civilian lives, giving up their spare time to serve. We asked Will Blair, who works in Corporate Communications at Barclays, why he became a Reservist and his advice to anyone thinking of joining.

When I was a young boy, I spent hours, even days, playing with erector sets, which consisted of little metal beams, nuts, and bolts (and later, pulleys, gears, and small electric motors). Basically, you could construct anything your mind came up with, tear it apart, and create something new and completely different. And you didn’t have to make something stationery — with the little motors, you could create things like windmills or planes. I’ve built automobiles, towers, homes, and more.
