Preventing food waste and feeding people facing hunger is proving to be easier than ever thanks to Feeding America’s MealConnect application.

Each year, 72 billion pounds of good, safe food ends up in landfills in the U.S., yet people go hungry. With support from General Mills, Feeding America created a technology platform called MealConnect that gives food donors a convenient, free and safe way to reduce waste and connect surplus meals with those facing hunger.

Food waste is prevalent across the globe, but have you ever thought about how much waste might be happening on college campuses?

Americans waste 40 percent of the food that’s produced. And the average college student generates 142 pounds of food waste every year.

These statistics are staggering when nearly 15 percent in the U.S., or 47 million people, live below the poverty line.

When guests visit our integrated resorts, they are treated to elegantly designed spaces, celebrity chef restaurants and exquisite customer service. But rarely do they realize what it takes to operate these mini cities behind the scenes. While our ultimate purpose is guest satisfaction, we also consciously aim to reduce our environmental footprint.

Comcast Cares Day takes place every April, but summer interns wanted to make change happen, too. Many of the nearly 140 interns and co-ops working in Comcast’s Philadelphia headquarters spent a recent afternoon volunteering at Share Food Program, a Philadelphia nonprofit with a mission of providing fresh produce to communities in need.

The Campus Kitchens Project teams with the General Mills Foundation to prepare healthy meals for the community from perishable food that would otherwise go to waste.

In celebration of its 50th anniversary, and in keeping with its philosophy of supporting local communities, Subaru of America, Inc. announced today its donation of 50 vehicles to Meals on Wheels America. This fall, 50 new 2018 Subaru Outback vehicles will be donated to select Meals on Wheels programs throughout the county, to be used in the delivery of an estimated 53,000 meals to an additional 3,700 seniors across 39 states. The donation will address the Meals on Wheels network’s growing demand for fuel-efficient, versatile and safe delivery vehicles to enable our nation’s most vulnerable seniors to live nourished lives with independence and dignity.

We often think of food insecurity and hunger as something that happens in other countries, or only in the poorest parts of our nation. But the reality is that people are hungry all over the country, including in some of the nation’s wealthiest towns and counties.
