More than 65 million people around the world have been forcibly displaced, a record high since World War II, according to the U.N. Refugee Agency. Only a small number of refugees — less than 1 percent of 17.5 million in 2016 — will ever be resettled. In communities of refugee crisis, we’ve seen technology prove a powerful tool in enabling and empowering refugees to build better, more prosperous lives.

Artist and activist Ai Weiwei and leading arts non-profit Public Art Fund are partnering for a second time with eBay to exclusively release a series of six powerful new works of art for charity on June 20, World Refugee Day.

In 2017, our global properties were called on many times to step up in the face of tragedy. From Typhoon Hato in Macao to the Las Vegas shooting massacre and other U.S. natural disasters, Las Vegas Sands and its Team Members rose to the challenges.

On any given night, nearly 6,500 people are homeless in Southern Nevada, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Nevada ranks eighth in the nation for the rate of homeless persons – the smallest region among the metropolitan areas ranking in the top 10 for homelessness. Of that population, more than 60 percent of all homeless people in Nevada are unsheltered, living on the streets in encampments, cars, or other places not meant for human habitation. Las Vegas/Clark County ranks fifth among large metropolitan areas with the highest rates of unsheltered homeless.

On May 31, Northern Illinois Food Bank dedicated the Epsilon Bulk Repack Room, celebrating its ongoing, generous partnership with Epsilon, an Alliance Data company.

At the beginning of the 2018 hurricane season, Rebuilding Together, the leading national nonprofit organization with a mission of repairing homes, revitalizing communities, rebuilding lives, is continuing its disaster recovery work in four states affected by natural disaster in 2017 and 2016.

The Venetian and The Palazzo Team Member Biar Atem recently attended Amnesty International USA’s Annual General Meeting in Washington, DC as a “Build Bridges” panel member to empower Amnesty members to advocate for refugees and human rights.

Through the implementation of the Fresh Start Mobile Showers, WestCare partnered with Sands Cares, Las Vegas Sands’ corporate giving program, as a local stop for providing the community’s homeless population with private showering facilities. As the mobile showers began to gain traction, WestCare has been an important partner in assisting those experiencing homelessness in the Las Vegas area.
