The riots at New York City’s Stonewall Inn in June 1969 are generally cited as a catalyst for the LGBTQ rights movement, but efforts had been growing steadily during the previous two decades. This was a time in U.S. history when homosexuality was still listed as a mental disorder, and gay behavior was illegal in 49 states. People could be arrested for having a physical relationship with a member of the same sex. The act of wearing clothes resembling the opposite gender was outlawed. In major cities, raids of gay bars were common.

Justin Sun, founder of blockchain platform TRON and CEO of peer-to-peer streaming leader BitTorrent, is this year’s winner. in support of the SickKids Herbie Fund, Scotiabank announced a new $1 million donation to support Phase Two of the SickKids-Caribbean Initiative, a project with a goal of helping to build a sustainable program to diagnose and treat paediatric cancer and serious blood disorders in the Caribbean. The initiative – in which Scotiabank is recognized as the Telemedicine Partner – connects doctors at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto with doctors in six countries in the Caribbean to help improve – and in many cases, save the lives of young people.
