By all accounts, there is not a more exciting time to be in Michigan and in the energy industry. We’re on the cusp of an innovation economy, where technology makes it easier and more affordable to leave the planet better than we found it through renewable energy.

The Sustainability Academy is CSE’s global initiative to offer affordable, specialized, online education in the field of Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility.

Of particular relevance today is the Certificate on Carbon Reduction Strategy. The IPCC’s latest report finds that if greenhouse gas emissions increase by 1.5C by 2040 (down from the previous fear of 2C), the world can expect inundating coastlines and intensifying droughts and poverty.

As 2017 drew to a close, James Hobart recalls that his days felt routine, with few new challenges. But that was about to change when, along with 11 other participants, Hobart was accepted into the 2018 cohort of the Aboriginal Management Program (AMP) at the UBC Sauder School of Business.

The AMP is proudly supported by Goldcorp and is a rigorous five-month-long certificate program aimed at identifying promising Indigenous entrepreneurs then putting them on a fast track aimed at developing their leadership, project management, finance, and business planning skills.

Google isn’t the only major corporation taking the initiative on training its future workforce; car manufacturer Subaru announced in September that it was getting in on the action, launching an associate’s degree in automotive technology with Mt. Hood Community College in Oregon.

Legg Mason and our affiliate colleagues in the US and UK are helping to ensure that students in our communities are starting the new school year off on the right foot – and have continued support throughout the academic year.

These efforts are aligned with our primary charitable/philanthropic focus, which is education, particularly in the area of underserved youth.

Talented MBA candidates from 36 of the nation’s leading business schools competed for $50,000 in scholarships in the 2018 National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA) Graduate Student Case Competition®, sponsored by FCA US LLC.

The NBMBAA/FCA US National Graduate Student Case Competition is an annual event that gives high-potential students an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and problem-solving skills in a formal competition.

Eric Miller’s job brought him to Detroit in 2012, but he brought more to the city than just his family.

Launched in 2013, The Lawn Academy provides Detroit-area boys and girls, ages 11-19, a six-week college immersion program in partnership with Wayne County Community College District (WCCCD).

As a high school senior in California last year, Jose knew his Dad was excited about his college application process – even if he didn’t have much experience with how it all worked. Jose has been aiming for a degree in computer sciences—a big goal, since nobody in his family has ever graduated from college. But since he was young, Jose has had a unique support system through the California-based organization, and Dell Youth Learning partner, Peninsula Bridge.

As part of our commitment to workplace diversity, Red Lake Gold Mines implemented the Stope School Program in 2007.

The Stope School Program is a Common Core training program that trains both local and First Nations people who are interested in working in an underground mining environment. The program runs for three months and consists of Underground Hard Rock modules, as well as other specialty modules. The Stope School Program prepares the trainees to enter the workforce knowing the basics of mining with safety as a priority. Training consists of theory and practical activities consistent with the guidelines outlined by the Common Core Modules, a series of programs administered by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU).

Through our Youth Learning program, Dell is working with nonprofit partners worldwide to give underserved youth better access to technology and education. Going beyond access, we’re also creating a culture of inclusion, wherein science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) learning is seen as being for everyone — boys and girls, rich and poor. And we’re teaching youth of all backgrounds how to be persistent and work though challenging problems.
