CHICAGO, April 21, 2015 /3BL Media/ - In an effort to support community health and revive a local play space for residents, Humana teamed up with CBS EcoMedia through its WellnessAd program to fund renovations to the athletic fields at Ridge Park, operated by the Chicago Park District. Renovations began in the fall of 2014 and were completed in the spring of 2015.

Community leaders, including local legislators, came together last Saturday, April 18, to celebrate the renovations in a special ceremony held during the weekend sports games. To kick off the event, Alderman Matthew O’Shea of the 19th Ward, stepped up to the plate and threw the ceremonial pitch before the afternoon youth baseball games began.

“The Chicago Park District is grateful for the support offered by Humana and CBS EcoMedia,” said Steve Lux, Chicago Park District’s Chief Financial Officer. “Ridge Park’s fields are highly utilized and this renovation will help us meet that demand and continue to offer a variety of recreation opportunities in this community.”

In addition to Lux,  William Snyder, Illinois Market Vice President of Humana and Paul Polizzotto, President and Founder of CBS EcoMedia, shared their remarks at the celebration, focusing on the success of the project and the future impact these new fields will have on the community.

“Revitalizing Chicago’s Ridge Park is not just about giving back to the communities Humana serves – it’s also about establishing neighborhood spaces that inspire physical activity, encourage intergenerational togetherness and promote life-long well-being,” said Snyder. “We are honored to be a part of this project and hope the renovated fields inject new life and energy to this community for years to come.”

Renovations of the athletic fields included support for soil upgrades, field aeration, under-drainage improvements, field grading and sodding. Improvements to Ridge Park’s playground and tennis courts were made in 2013, but funding was not available to also complete renovations to the athletic field.

“Contributing to the development and upkeep of accessible, high-quality parks and recreation spaces is central to EcoMedia’s mission,” said Polizzotto. “We are grateful to both Humana and the Chicago Park District for supporting the families and young athletes here at Ridge Park.”
