Jan. 10 marks National Cut Your Energy Costs Day. In the Cox Conserves Sustainability Survey, small and medium-sized business leaders named utility cost savings as the top benefit of sustainability initiatives.

Since 2007, Cox Enterprises has offset 82,000 tons of carbon through alternative energy and energy conservation projects – proving that what’s good for the environment is also good for the bottom line. Through the company’s employee solar program, the company helps individuals reduce energy costs at home as well.

Here are five ways to cut energy costs in the home and office.

  1. Shut off and unplug electronic devices when you are not using them.
  2. Turn off your dishwasher's drying cycle and allow the dishes to air dry.
  3. Dim or turn off lights near windows in the daytime.
  4. Keep shades open during the day to let sunshine in and close them at night.
  5. Use the stairs instead of taking the elevator.
