Environment: Building a More Sustainable Future

For Bacardi, environmental sustainability is good business – an approach that dates to the very beginning of the company more than 158 years ago. When Bacardi founder Don Facundo Bacardí Massó started his business in 1862, he accepted the Spanish government’s challenge to reduce surplus amounts of molasses in Cuba, leading to the crafting of BACARDÍ® rum. Repurposing old whisky barrels to age his rum was also part of his original plan, a practice still in use today. Our environmental sustainability commitment has grown over seven generations and our vision is to be the world's most environmentally responsible spirits company. Our focus areas for building a more sustainable future include water, climate change, and waste. As the first global spirits company to pledge against single-use plastic straws in March 2016, we continue our efforts to find more ways to remove non-essential, non-recyclable single-use plastic waste and are currently reviewing opportunities across our supply chain.

The Long-Term Benefits of Sustainability in Distilleries
One of the biggest players in the sustainability game is Bacardi, which has championed the approach since the beginning of the company, more than 155 years ago.

The Bermuda-based group launched an ambitious environmental sustainability initiative called Good Spirited, with specific goals in sourcing, packaging and operations. The firm cut its greenhouse-gas emissions intensity in half in 2016 – more than a year earlier than its end-of-December-2017 target.

Bombay Sapphire's Laverstoke Mill is a Sustainable Marvel
Since 2011, Laverstoke Mill has been home to one of the most recognisable of gins, Bombay Sapphire.

Since the gin distillery took up residence, the most striking addition to this quiet Victorian site has been the two intertwining glasshouses, designed by Thomas Heatherwick’s studio. Behind these picturesque scenes though lies the heart of Laverstoke; the ecological and sustainability emphasis that is key to the site. A biomass boiler uses by-products from the distillation to provide heat and hot water; through this, coupled with a photovoltaic array and a hydro-electric turbine on the river, up to 85 per cent of the site’s power is self-generated to reduce its carbon footprint.
