December 22, 2014 /3BL Media/ - Approximately 2,800 brand-new, age-appropriate books will make their way into the hands of kids from low-income families thanks to the nonprofit social enterprise First Book and Weir’s Furniture.

A special reading party was held on December 15 at Aikin Elementary School to kick off the partnership. After opening remarks, Weir’s furniture employees enjoyed reading to the students and a fun holiday-themed activity.

Through participation in EcoMedia’s EducationAd program, Weir’s Furniture will help nearly 65 teachers at Aikin Elementary School emphasize the importance of making reading a daily habit to approximately 650 students. Funding will also support the Aikin Elementary School’s lending library where students will have the opportunity to take books home with them, encouraging after-school reading.

“Books pave the path to a child’s success, in school and in life,” said Kyle Zimmer, president and CEO of First Book. “By putting these critical educational resources into the hands of local kids in need, Weir’s Furniture is improving lives today and investing in the future of their community.”

First Book provides new books and educational resources to educational programs serving children from low-income families. By working with a network of over 135,000 community-based schools and programs, First Book helps elevate the quality of education for kids in need. With help from partners like Weir’s Furniture, First Book hopes to reach every one of the nearly 30 million kids that live in low-income households in the United States.

“There’s no underestimating the power of books on young impressionable minds,” said Paul Polizzotto, president and founder of CBS EcoMedia. “We’re grateful to Weir’s Furniture for helping kids read, learn and succeed by putting thousands of new books into the hands of area kids that need them most.”
