This Earth Day, we asked Coulter Wood, a senior staff engineer at Hormel Foods who is responsible for the company’s energy management, to share some of his favorite tips — things people can do in their own lives to help preserve the Earth’s resources. Check out his thoughts and learn more about Coulter and his role at the company below!
This weekend the world celebrates Earth Day – a time to reflect on environmental impact and take action to create sustainable change. Established in 1970, Earth Day is now celebrated by more than one billion people worldwide – including participation from countless companies. Here’s how organizations are choosing to keep the holiday fresh and top of mind through engaging consumer activations:
he Arbor Day Foundation has announced that Telemark Diversified Graphics is committed to partnering with the Foundation to plant 30,000 trees in the Mississippi River Valley. The partnership was launched by Telemark as part of their sustainability efforts, and the program will be supported by a percentage of Telemark sales over the course of three years, with plans to continue the program long-term.
In 2008, Dell started using post-consumer recycled plastics sourced from water bottles and milk jugs in our products. In 2013, we took it a step further and started putting plastics from e-waste recovered via Dell’s recycling programs back into new products. But we felt there were more ways we could contribute.
In partnership with The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), Aramark is conducting a series of plant-based culinary trainings for chefs like David Leicht, Certified Executive Chef (CEC), American Academy of Chefs (AAC) and Regional Culinary Director for the Mid-Atlantic Region. In this Q & A, David talks about his plant-forward journey.
What’s the greatest threat to our planet? Climate change? Water scarcity? Poor land management? None of the above. The biggest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will solve these problems. That’s precisely why we doubled down with our ambitious Sustainable in a Generation Plan to support our global home. It’s also why we’re celebrating Earth Week (April 16-22) by proudly sharing our science-based approach and sustainability progress around the world.
As part of Twentieth Century Fox’s commitment to environmental sustainability in its film productions, the studio recently led efforts to green the set of The Post, Steven Spielberg’s Academy Award-nominated drama starring Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks about The Washington Post’s role in publishing the Pentagon Papers in 1971. The filming process lasted 52 days and took the cast and crew across dozens of locations in New York and Washington, D.C., with each new site presenting its own unique sustainability challenges. However, the combined efforts of the cast and crew allowed the movie to save 32.5 metric tons of carbon emissions, divert 80% of its waste from landfill, and donate more than 2,600 meals to those in need.
Xylem’s site in Guelph, Ontario conducted a Walk for Water on April 10th as part of Xylem Watermark’s Make Your Mark 30 Day Challenge. Volunteers carried 4-liter jugs of water while walking a 5 km route to bring attention to the issues of water scarcity in many countries and to try to understand what millions of people around the world must do to obtain clean water for their families and homes. The walk ended at the Guelph Food Bank, where the volunteers donated their jugs of water.
Companies appreciate that natural capital greatly benefits business, but what is required is quantifying and demonstrating the business value of natural capital.
In February, EarthEcho International, along with partner Love A Sea Turtle of Greenville, North Carolina, hosted a training for volunteers from Xylem’s Morrisville location. Nine Xylem employees worked with over 100 students, guiding them through the EarthEcho Water Challenge and helping them to learn about the local aquatic ecosystem. In addition, students were able to interact with the new STEAM Lab that Love A Sea Turtle and the City of Greenville opened at River Park North. This STEAM Lab includes the first permanent EarthEcho Water Challenge field testing station to engage members of the community in the program, and was officially unveiled on World Water Day this year.
