A Distributed Generation Future

Here’s the basic idea: instead of a small number of power plants providing a lot of people and businesses with power, we can instead use a large number of small-scale electricity generators, each providing a small number of local users with power.

Regulatory Focus on Methane Reduction Spurs Development in Leak Detection and Monitoring

Following the issuance of the Clean Power Plan, EPA’s well-publicized regulation aimed at reducing CO2 emissions from the power plants, the agency has shifted its focus to reducing methane emissions from the oil and gas sector in order to further reduce the anthropogenic contribution to global climate change. Methane, while emitted in much lesser quantities, is a more potent greenhouse gas than CO2, estimated to be around 25 times more harmful than its more widely known counterpart. Today, based on millions of dollars in grants for research, leak detection and monitoring technology may be ready to make a giant leap forward.

Water and Wastewater Industry Can Address Funding Challenges through Public-Private Partnerships

Data Management Tools Should Move from Mere Reporting to Automation and Analytics

Advances in technology, connectivity and software have made an increasing number of tools available to improve utility performance. The Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) deployments of the past decade demonstrate there is tremendous value to be found in the data generated across utility service networks.

Resilience Planning Will Help Increase Awareness for Properly Valuing Water

For years, those working in the water industry have realized a truth that is now reaching a broader audience – water is woefully underpriced.

There is a renewed focus on the price of water infrastructure, prompted in part, by declining consumption, according to Ann Bui, Managing Director for water services in Black & Veatch’s management consulting business. As efficient water appliances have become more prevalent, consumption per capita has decreased. Conservation efforts in areas where water scarcity is a major concern have further pushed the decline.

Water Utilities Show High Aspirations Toward Reducing Energy or Achieving Energy Neutrality

Water and wastewater utilities in the U.S. have high aspirations for energy reduction goals, or even moving toward energy neutral operations, but barriers are plentiful. Fortunately, approaches are being developed that can help system operators make significant progress in overcoming these obstacles.
