Consumers Energy Foundation Calls for Planet Awards Applications Supporting Michigan’s Natural Resources with $500,000

The Consumers Energy Foundation is strengthening its commitment to Michigan’s environment by announcing new plans to provide $500,000 to nonprofits for projects aiming to preserve, restore and protect Michigan’s natural resources.

The first Planet Awards will provide as much as $250,000 to two or more Michigan nonprofits aiming to make a positive impact on the state’s land, water, or air.

Expanding Sustainability Through Partnership

It is a hot, dry August day, but Steve Lawler of the Mower Soil and Water Conservation District just made it rain 1 inch on the Krell family farm. On one small corner of the farm, anyway. He is demonstrating how different soil management techniques retain rainwater. If that sounds dry, it’s because the subtext is the interesting part — better rainwater retention means more nutrients stay in the soil. For farmers, that translates to better yields.

This demonstration is part of a Cedar River Watershed Partnership farm event, where a coalition of private, public and nonprofit groups addresses challenges to water resources in the Cedar River Watershed, like flooding and sedimentation.

Had you stopped by Atlanta’s Trinity Towers on the morning of Nov. 28, you’d have found precious little evidence of what was about to take place. Until noon, the senior residence’s activity room and adjoining kitchen were still, awaiting the arrival of a bevy of volunteers from Hormel Foods and Goodr.

Then the midday magic began to unfold. In came a truckload of food from Kroger and other purveyors, as well as can after can of Dinty Moore® beef stew. Workers began buzzing about, creating a popup grocery store of well-organized (and picture-perfect) presentations of fresh produce, bacon, roasts and other food items. Those in the kitchen went about the task of ladling beef stew into stockpots and slow-cookers, a treat for the seniors, not to mention the reason for the event.
