Supply Chain & the Circular Economy

Growing Beyond Europe, Korona Candles Lights Up U.S.

Today, a new chapter is being written in Dublin, Virginia, at the company’s first production facility in the States. Back in Poland, the company started the manual production of candles with a team of about 20 workers and several basic machines. It was very labor intensive, Agnieszka Fafara, the company’s president and CEO, explained. Ignited by the desire to manufacture top-quality candles, the company invested in automation and attracted more skilled employees in the process. Korona experienced tremendous growth in its hometown, building up to 900 employees.

Helping Reebok Grow a Plant-Based Shoe

At the heart of a circular economy is the reengineering of conventional linear production models so that value creation is decoupled from the consumption – then disposal - of finite resources. What was once considered waste becomes the feedstock for new processes. One way to drive this shift toward circularity is by designing renewable materials that can displace the use of sensitive or fossil-based resources.

Shifting to a Digital Grid Forces System-Wide Grid Modernization

We are at the dawn of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, defined by its velocity and volume, scope and scale, and systems impact. The foundation of this new era is squarely built upon the success of the "digital grid." The first three revolutions—defined by the introduction of steam and mechanization, electricity and computing, respectively—all had profound societal impacts, but they lacked the exponential rate of technological breakthroughs and complexity that define the fourth.
