Microgrids aren’t new. But Duke Energy’s efforts to power them with renewable energy have caught the attention of the industry. In simple terms, a microgrid is an energy system consisting of distributed energy sources – like solar and batteries – that can operate in parallel with, or independently from, the main power grid.
New smart meters are being installed throughout the Duke Energy service territories. These new meters can collect the same data as the old ones, but unlike the old meters that were read once a month, smart meters relay data hourly, giving customers more insight into their energy usage than ever before.

Nonprofits like TreeFolks in Texas have restored habitats, planted trees, and engaged volunteers, thanks to the Wells Fargo Environmental Solutions grant program which awarded $15 million in Environmental Solutions for Communities grants between 2012 and 2016. Grantees used the funds to restore more than 94,000 acres of habitat, plant more than a million trees, and engage more than 900,000 volunteers in land and water conservation, environmental education, and water efficiency. Southern California Edison delivered more solar energy to its customers last year than any other utility in the nation, according to rankings compiled by the Smart Electric Power Alliance. The rankings were announced at the alliance’s annual Utility Conference.
