I will never forget how shocked I felt when, having volunteered in my children's school to run art activity groups, several eight year olds declared loudly 'I'm no good at art, Miss!'. I thought: 'Who told you that? You are too young to feel like this!'. The sad thing was that they were all very keen to join in, attracted by the display of bright collage materials, paints and crayons, but the feeling of 'being no good at art' definitely held them back, making them hesitate. Not long ago, they would have all crowded around the table, confident in their ability to make messy and exuberant artworks full of stories and meaning: the fact that these would end up looking soggy and messy did not lessen their enthusiasm and enjoyment.
On February 18, FOX Sports President Eric Shanks and Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban returned to their alma mater Indiana University for "The Future of Sports and Technology Panel," a conversation about trends in the sports business and the value of education. More than 400 students and faculty attended, including the university's current participants in FOX Sports University, a unique program giving college students hands-on experience in the sports industry. Dr. Galen Clavio, an Associate Professor and Director of the university's National Sports Journalism Center, moderated the discussion, which posed education as a lifelong pursuit.
The Television Club at Bishop Kearney High School recently received a state-of-the-art renovation of its studio thanks to 21st Century Fox. The company purchased new equipment for the school's student-run news station, WBKS, and professionals from Fox 5 trained the students on how to operate it. The initiative comes as part of the company's commitment to support and develop the next generation of journalists and storytellers. The Brooklyn-based high school's daily news broadcasts are much improved since the club started more than 20 years ago, and this new equipment will enhance their capabilities even further. The club has become a big draw for incoming students.
