Responsible Production & the Circular Economy

This month, we will feature several success stories from Conservation Alliance member organizations and their business partners. They all follow a common theme: several years ago, member organizations relied on the guidance provided in the Alliance Common Vision to work with their partners to write strong time-bound commitments to improve procurement policies and practices. As many of those commitment timelines are concluding, reports of success are emerging from across the sustainable seafood community.

Leading green hotel chain The Rezidor Hotel Group publishes its Responsible Business Report. Included since 2010 in Ethisphere’s World’s Most Ethical Companies List, Rezidor is committed to being the most innovative and responsible hotel company with leading sustainable hotel brands such as Radisson Blu and Park Inn by Radisson.

The glass facade of the fifth floor of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) building gives Professor Thomas Auer a great view of the city, but not necessarily a clear insight into the future of sustainable building technology. The 1960s edifice in which Auer and his students are researching the buildings of tomorrow was renovated only a few years ago. “You just get the bare essentials: lights on, lights off, open windows, close windows,” Auer notes with a smile. He adds: “With public buildings, there are certain financial constraints. Nevertheless, they still manage to offer a high degree of user comfort.”

We are investing £9.6 million in Project Green Leap to reduce carbon emissions and water use at these three Horlicks factories. For example, we continue to increase the amount of waste biomass we buy to replace coal as a fuel in our boilers. We will be constructing a new 1MW combined heat and power plant at Rajahmundry that will also be fuelled with waste biomass.

Recently proposed EPA regulation provides a streamlined approach for healthcare facilities to better manage their hazardous pharmaceutical waste. To prepare for these changes, healthcare facilities, including manufacturers, distributers, pharmacies and retailers of pharmaceutical products in the USA will need to make operational adjustments around notification, training, record keeping and reporting.

Lyft and General Motors today announced the launch of their Express Drive short-term rental program exclusive to the Lyft platform. The program will make cars available to Lyft drivers at affordable rates with insurance and maintenance included.
