Sodexo Supports Gonzaga University Students in Fight Against Hunger

240 people enjoyed a meal at the Salvation Army in Spokane, WA, on April 26, prepared and served by Gonzaga University students and the Sodexo management team. This is the third year that Sodexo and Gonzaga students have sponsored an event as part of the company’s Stop Hunger Servathon held every April and it is just the most recent example of how the company and campus community have partnered to combat hunger.

JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Bloomberg Philanthropies today announced $7.5 million to expand young people’s access to economic opportunity in New Orleans. As growing industries in Greater New Orleans require a more skilled workforce, these grants are designed to dramatically increase the number of young people graduating from the city’s public high schools with opportunities to secure well-paying, high-demand jobs.

Levine Cancer Institute Receives $1.6 Million Grant for Lung Cancer Program

Carolinas HealthCare System’s Levine Cancer Institute today announced that it has received a $1.6 million grant from the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation, to support their program, Lung B.A.S.E.S. 4 Life, an innovative model that will feature a mobile unit for early identification of lung cancer coupled with a comprehensive education, navigation and clinical intervention program to support better outcomes for lung cancer patients.

The Canadian province of Alberta is currently facing one of the worst natural disasters in recent years, as they battle wildfires that span 400,000 acres, and are expected to burn for months. The fires continue to devastate the area. Diageo and Crown Royal have mobilized efforts to bring some relief to those in the affected area.

Global Cities, Inc. Convenes Representatives from Over 20 U.S. School Districts & Educators from Europe to Promote Early Global Digital Education

Twenty-five U.S. school districts from 16 states participated in a symposium on global digital education convened by Global Cities, Inc., a program of Bloomberg Philanthropies. More than 20 of the school districts were from the largest school districts in the U.S. including New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Las Vegas, Ft. Lauderdale and Houston. In addition, the symposium was attended by educators from Barcelona, London, and Warsaw.

Electronic Payments Allow Charities to Focus on the Things That Matter

When was the last time you sent someone a letter in the mail? Has it been a while? By contrast, when did you send your last email just by pushing a button? Technology and its ability to automate routine tasks is not only changing our lives, but also transforming the way we support meaningful causes. Writing a check is like writing a letter when there’s email. It’s wildly less efficient than using electronic payments. The global movement toward electronic payments is far more than just a “flavor of the day.” According to the latest survey done by the AFP (Association of Finance Professionals), 80% of North American companies are transitioning their B2B payments from paper checks to electronic payments, and several large countries have already ceased using checks completely.
