A finales del 2011, cerró la mina a cielo abierto de Marlin de Goldcorp. Es decir, cesaron las operaciones a cielo abierto; sin embargo, este no fue el final de la historia de Goldcorp para los vecinos guatemaltecos de la mina. En cierta forma, era un comienzo.

There is a lot of wall painting and tree planting going on in employer supported volunteering. This is good for team building, for immediate (and visual!) impact. It is not so good if a lasting effect, or dare we say sustainability, is the aim. Plus, there are only so many walls to paint and so many trees to plant.

At the end of 2011, Goldcorp’s Marlin mine’s open pit closed. Well, technically the pit ceased operations, but this wasn’t the end of the Goldcorp story for the mine’s Guatemalan neighbours. In some ways, it was a beginning.

Periodically, Timberland sells sample products to employees to help clear inventory from the past season. While any leftover product is always donated to a good cause, the sales provide double the benefit: product used, and a way to raise funds for non-profit organizations.

On November 5, Timberland had their second annual “Craftstock” event, where twenty-five Timberland employees used their service hours to make no-sew pillows and blankets to donate to those in need.
