Newmont Reducing Cases of Holes in the Heart in Ghana
Investing in the wellbeing of our host communities is part of our mission as a sustainable and responsible mining company. In Ghana, we recently partnered with the Children’s Heart Foundation (CHF) to help save the life of Daniel Darkwa, a three-year-old boy suffering from atrial septal defect and patent ductus arteriosus, a rare condition that creates “holes” in the wall separating the top two chambers of the heart.

Bringing Medical Care to Communities in Suriname
In close cooperation with Suriname’s Ministry of Health and Project C.U.R.E., Newmont Suriname helped bring vital medical services to residents of villages near the Merian mine last month. A team of nine medical professionals and volunteers treated more than 300 patients during the four-day clinic.

Case Study: Engaging Tribal Members on Remediation of Former Uranium Mine
In 2016, the newly hired tribal community liaison officer initiated informal engagement efforts, attended weekly remediation project construction meetings, and began the development of the community engagement plan that will be implemented in 2017. In addition, community engagement professionals associated with the STOI are providing input and helping build capacity to ensure the officer serves as a valued resource for the STOI community and tribal government throughout the entire Midnite mine remediation process.

Recently, Newmont employees and members of the local Pamaka government worked together to clean up debris and litter along the shore of the Marowijne River in Langa Tabiki village.

Diversity & Inclusion

Celebrating Indigenous Culture and Heritage in Australia
NAIDOC week celebrations took place at Newmont operations across the country.At our Tanami and Boddington operations, in collaboration with Sodexo, a selection of indigenous foods were on the menu throughout the week, including kangaroo, crocodile and barramundi. Local artists displayed their work and participants were encouraged to share the importance of languages, enjoy displays of cultural artefacts, tools, shelters and foods.

Denver Donation Brings Benefits to Ghana Women’s Group
At Newmont’s Ahafo mine in Ghana, the Women’s Consultative Committee (WCC) provides financial assistance to local female entrepreneurs through a revolving fund established to provide micro loans and credit to women with small-scale business ventures.

Our Yanacocha operation is located in the province of Cajamarca, a region in Peru known for its agricultural communities. As part of Newmont’s commitment to be a catalyst for long-term socio-economic development, Yanacocha has invested in improving access to basic education for many living in the rural communities close to the mine.
