Mike Bloomberg issued his new letter on philanthropy today as part of the release of Bloomberg Philanthropies' 2019 annual report.

His lifetime giving now totals more than $8 billion.

He writes: “In the year ahead, as political candidates debate what to do in the future, we will work to improve the present by expanding our efforts."

The 25 Most Generous Philanthropists in America Today
America's wealthiest people donated $14.7 billion in 2017 to causes, alma maters, foundations, and charities — more than doubling the amount given away in 2016. For 18 years, The Chronicle of Philanthropy has published an annual round up of the top-50 philanthropists in America by calculating their yearly donations. In 2017, the individuals and couples on the list donated a median of $97 million, doubling the giving amount from the first list published in 2000.

Bloomberg Hosts 5th Annual Young Women’s Leadership Summit
On Saturday, March 3, Bloomberg hosted its 5th annual Startup Young Women’s Leadership Summit, convening 500 high school and college-aged girls at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for a day of networking and mentoring. More than 200 employees in the Bloomberg Startup program joined together with students from 34 diverse partner organizations, including CUNY’s Macaulay Honor College, the Young Women’s Leadership Network, PENCIL, and our partner school University Heights High School, Girls Who Invest, the Ghetto Film School, and other high schools that participate in our FIRST Robotics programs.

Small Business Owners Descend on Washington to Advocate for Small Businesses With Goldman Sachs CEO, Warren Buffett, Michael Bloomberg
More than 2,000 small business owners will descend on Washington for the first-ever 10,000 Small Businesses Summit: The Big Power of Small Business from Feb. 13-14. They will charge Capitol Hill with more than 2,000 small business owners to chart a path for growth and share their experiences and insights with policymakers. Goldman Sachs Chairman and CEO Lloyd C. Blankfein, Berkshire Hathaway Chairman and CEO Warren Buffett, and founder of Bloomberg LP and Bloomberg Philanthropies and three-term Mayor of New York City Michael R. Bloomberg, among numerous other industry leaders and policymakers, will also participate in the Summit.

Insights From Indonesia: Protecting Our Coral Reefs
Our oceans program, like all of our work at Bloomberg Philanthropies, aims to ensure better, longer lives for the greatest number of people. So it’s good news that the United Nations International Coral Reef Initiative has declared 2018 the International Year of the Reef. Coral reefs are home to one in every four fish in the ocean, and are a critical backbone of ocean ecosystems. Unfortunately, climate change threatens to destroy 90 percent of reefs in the next three decades.
