Water is vital to our operations, used for washing and processing raw materials, cooling and cleaning equipment, hygiene and our bottled water business. We continue to reduce, reuse and recycle water across our business through water-saving innovations and technologies. Altogether, our U.S. factories are withdrawing 10% less water per ton of product than they did five years ago.
Green infrastructure incorporates natural systems into engineered systems to provide clean water, conserve ecosystem values and functions, and offer a wide array of ancillary benefits to people and wildlife.
Building on the company’s long-standing commitment to environmental sustainability, Aramark today announced a refreshed and enhanced Green Thread environmental sustainability platform. Green Thread brings to life Aramark’s commitments and programs focused on responsible sourcing, waste minimization, operational efficiency and transportation management. As part of Green Thread, the company is also introducing a new Sustainable Seafood Sourcing Policy and a partnership with LeanPath to support food waste tracking and measurement across the company.
While there may be sufficient physical sources of water, behavioural patterns often lead to water scarcity. That which may be abundant effectively becomes scarce through waste, poor pricing, ineffi cient allocation or the inability of human systems to keep up with the latest technologies. However, institutions can foster decisions that take us on a path from scarcity back to abundance.
To assess the true sustainability of a resource you have to look at both sides of the coin to fully appreciate water risk and security as material issues on a country’s water balance sheet.
We need to change our relationship with water to ensure that communities and businesses can thrive today and tomorrow, and the circular economy must be part of the solution. Water can no longer be considered an inexpensive, “use and dispose” commodity but should be valued as a reusable asset and growth enabler. Yet today, less than three percent of wastewater is recycled. In the United States, industry reuses far less than ten percent of the fresh water used for industrial processes. The identification of waste in terms of resources, capacity, lifecycle and embedded value that is the building block of the circular economy, must also be fully applied to water cycles.
