Keep America Beautiful, the nation’s iconic community improvement nonprofit organization, led by its network of more than 600 affiliates and other partners across the country, will rally tens of thousands of volunteers at events across the country on and around Earth Day, Sunday, April 22, as part of its annual Great American Cleanup.
In celebration of National Volunteer Week, the National Park Foundation and American Express are announcing seven grants supporting volunteer capacity-building efforts at national parks across the country. Designed to support the growth of park volunteer programs, projects funded by the grants include expansion of volunteer housing space, development of recruitment handbooks, and outreach to neighboring communities.
Being away from families and friends during the holidays can be difficult. For a person battling cancer and their loved ones – this can be especially challenging. To help brighten the day of these patients and their families, Astellas employees wrote inspirational messages on note cards and decorated them. These note cards were put into 2,000 care packages assembled by Astellas volunteers to give to patients and caregivers staying at the American Cancer Society Hope Lodges and Ronald McDonald Houses. The volunteer event was part of Astellas’ inaugural Patient and Caregiver Week – a series of events to educate employees on the patient’s journey and how Astellas can do more to help them.
April 15-21 is National Volunteer Week, a time to recommit ourselves to community service and celebrate the change-makers who positively impact the world around them through volunteerism. Here in our headquarters city of Charlotte, Duke Energy is celebrating the week by teaming up with Share Charlotte to support Do Good Week. Through Do Good Week, we hope to educate and engage our neighbors in the many ways we can do good through volunteerism.
Xylem’s site in Guelph, Ontario conducted a Walk for Water on April 10th as part of Xylem Watermark’s Make Your Mark 30 Day Challenge. Volunteers carried 4-liter jugs of water while walking a 5 km route to bring attention to the issues of water scarcity in many countries and to try to understand what millions of people around the world must do to obtain clean water for their families and homes. The walk ended at the Guelph Food Bank, where the volunteers donated their jugs of water.
Keep America Beautiful, the nation’s leading community improvement nonprofit, is accepting applications for the 2018-2019 National Youth Advisory Council through June 8. Keep America Beautiful’s National Youth Advisory Council creates a framework for youth engagement, providing a unique opportunity for 10 high school students from diverse backgrounds across the nation to participate in a service-learning and leadership development program.
In February, EarthEcho International, along with partner Love A Sea Turtle of Greenville, North Carolina, hosted a training for volunteers from Xylem’s Morrisville location. Nine Xylem employees worked with over 100 students, guiding them through the EarthEcho Water Challenge and helping them to learn about the local aquatic ecosystem. In addition, students were able to interact with the new STEAM Lab that Love A Sea Turtle and the City of Greenville opened at River Park North. This STEAM Lab includes the first permanent EarthEcho Water Challenge field testing station to engage members of the community in the program, and was officially unveiled on World Water Day this year.

The Arbor Day Foundation has announced today that Cacapon Institute of West Virginia have been awarded the Foundation’s inaugural Headwaters Award which celebrates innovative programs — in rural or urban areas — that support the improvement of water quality and quantity through forestry activities.
Last year, Hurricane Harvey caused widespread devastation, forcing thousands of people out of damaged homes in Texas. In December, 25 Xylem employees volunteered with Houston Habitat for Humanity, rebuilding homes that had suffered from flooding and water damage in the wake of the hurricane.
