Though corporate giving is a small percentage of all philanthropic monies given to non-profits in the U.S., it has an outsized opportunity to drive societal improvement and influence the hearts and minds of their stakeholders and the nation.
In recent times the academic world has focused increasing attention on the challenges of corporate sustainability. While the concept of corporate sustainability originated in the context of environmental impact and natural resources, in recent years the concept has been broadened to include various social concerns ranging from animal welfare, human rights and labor conditions, to issues of inequality and social justice.

Right before the U.S. equity markets opened on Friday, June 16th my phone erupted with texts from numerous industry friends on the announcement of the Amazon acquisition of Whole Foods. I have been in this industry for decades, and, for me, this was one of the most exciting and interesting days I can remember for the organic movement, certainly since the release of the USDA organic standards in 2002.

The company has incorporated diversity and inclusion into its values and primary business systems and processes. Fifty-one percent of the company’s 75,000 employees are women. In management, about 43 percent of employees are women. Additionally, the company has been recognized for gender diversity amongst its board of directors by the Women’s Forum of New York.
