Points of Light Conference Convenes in the Motor City Bringing Together Thousands of Global Changemakers

The 2016 Points of Light Conference on Volunteering and Service kicks off on Monday, June 27 at Detroit’s Cobo Center. The conference, the largest of its kind in the world, brings together nonprofit, government, business and civic leaders from across the globe to learn, connect and be inspired. Thousands of service-minded attendees from across the United States and 36 countries will gain the knowledge, resources and connections needed to galvanize the power of people in their own communities to create change. The conference will run through June 29.

Sara had fallen into the wrong crowd during her time at a local high school. When she entered foster care, she was struggling with substance abuse issues and gang involvement. Sara was placed in a group home, miles away from her family (which had no transportation to visit her), where she was being treated for substance abuse, but the home had no Spanish speaking staff. She continued to receive therapy and substance abuse treatment services in English, to no avail. Having a language and cultural barrier between them, the social worker and all involved could not communicate effectively with her.

Making a World of Difference: Amgen Canada Staff Volunteer During Community Day of Caring

Amgen Canada staff have a long history of supporting United Way in the Peel Region of Ontario, with approximately 50 percent of the head office staff participating. Last year they collectively donated almost $40,000 to the organization. Whether organizing a chili cook off and other fun events to raise funds, cleaning up a local park or stocking shelves at a food bank, these dedicated staff are committed to improving their local community.Last year, Amgen Canada staff joined over 150 volunteers to participate in United Way’s Spring Day of Caring. This annual event organizes efforts to fight poverty and improve lives by sending teams of volunteers into the community to work at participating non-profit organizations.
