And, one pint of blood donated can save up to three lives.
People affected by rare diseases often face extraordinary barriers. They can find it difficult to get the right diagnosis, expert advice or treatment and support. It’s challenging – especially when they are trying to cope with the uncertainty of an often progressive, devastating and debilitating disease. But the complexity of these conditions, and the small number of patients affected, means this area of research doesn’t always attract the greatest interest.
Nat Geo Wild Europe launched its sixth annual Big Cat Week in February. Each year, Nat Geo Wild sheds light on the plight of big cats around the world with a week of premieres. More than a television event, Big Cat Week is an extension of the Big Cats Initiative (BCI), a long-term commitment by the National Geographic Society to stop poaching, save habitat and sound the call that big steps are needed to save big cats around the world. This global initiative actively supports on-the-ground conservation projects and education to help stem and eventually reverse the rapid disappearance of big-cat populations.

The five-year survival rate of children with cancer varies from 10 to 80% depending on the level of resources available in their country. Yet, there are effective therapeutic solutions for the majority of these cancers, if the diagnosis is made early and if the child is correctly taken into care.
