Puget Sound Business Journal named Holland America Line’s Beth Bodensteiner, senior vice president of revenue management, to their prestigious list of “40 Under 40” for 2015. Selected from more than 400 nominees, Bodensteiner, age 39, will be recognized alongside her fellow honorees at a ceremony Sept. 17 at Showbox SODO in Seattle, Washington.

Employers have enjoyed a substantial advantage in the labor market since the Great Recession began nearly seven years ago. At the peak of unemployment in 2009, there were roughly five unemployed workers per job opening, creating a buyer’s market in which businesses could afford to skimp on programs aimed at motivating and retaining workers. I am especially interested in innovations that help us reclaim more materials and in nontoxic materials that can replace toxic compounds in electronics manufacturing, like the electronics from milk created by heroine of innovation Anke Domaske.
When a company takes the time to understand how its employees of different ages and backgrounds need to feel recognized, it increases its chances of engagement and retention. Engagement and retention however, can’t be forced or bought.

Steve Saltzgiver from Republic Services, Stephen Silverman from Raven Transport, and Scott Perry from Ryder System received the awards for HDT Sustainability.
