DALLAS, September 14, 2015 /3BL Media/ – Cigna (NYSE: CI) has selected Samsung Electronics America, Inc. as a recipient of the annual Cigna Well-Being Award for demonstrating a strong commitment to improving the health and well-being of its employees through a workplace wellness program.

Samsung Electronics America launched its wellness program in 2010 with initiatives that addressed smoking, stress management, nutrition and weight management, as well as chronic conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. Employees are encouraged to participate in healthy activities during the workday, including biometric screenings, health fairs and yoga classes. The company also offers fitness challenges, walking groups and food co-ops.

Since the program began, more than 40 percent of employees have participated in biometric screenings and completed a health assessment. Robust incentives have also encouraged the completion of annual physicals and preventive health screenings, which has increased health awareness among employees and lowered their health risks.

“Cigna is committed to working together with companies like Samsung Electronics America to create a strong culture of health,” said LaMonte Thomas, president and general manager for Cigna in North Texas and Oklahoma. “As the health care industry continues to evolve, it will be important to identify new ways to engage employees in their wellness, through programs that are personalized to their individual needs. And it will be equally important to recognize employers like Samsung that are leading the way.”

Cigna’s onsite support at Samsung has helped the company establish an employee Wellness Committee that has approximately 40 members from throughout the organization. In collaboration with Samsung, Cigna analyzed Samsung's health data and helped design a multi-year strategy to address the top five drivers of health care costs and promote healthy behavior change through greater health awareness and employee engagement.

Companies that apply for the Cigna Well-Being Award are evaluated based on the core components of their wellness program, including goals, implementation, incentives, leadership engagement and employee participation. All applications are reviewed and judged by Cigna's internal multi-departmental review committee.
