Approximately 300 million people in India are estimated to lack access to energy with an even higher number experiencing intermittent access. Since a majority of the population resides in rural areas, energy access acquires strategic importance for poverty reduction, quality of human capital, livelihood opportunities, inclusive economic development and social justice.

A new movement has begun, with more than 300 companies coming together to lead the fight against climate change. The need for a low-carbon future has become undeniable, a conclusion supported by the Paris Climate Agreement. The expansion of an unchanged energy system, with anything close to current levels of carbon-dioxide (CO2) intensity, would likely lead to global warming in excess of 4 degrees Celsius by the end of the century[1]— a crisis scientists agree would cause widespread and disastrous ecological problems.

While the 2015 Paris Agreement was the theoretical call for action to limit worldwide temperature to well below 2 degrees, there is a need for implementing this call with concrete action.

One might think the proliferation of renewables would spell the demise of natural gas, but market leaders know that gas-fired generation will continue to play an important role even as an influx of renewable energy reshapes the American power landscape.

Whirlpool Corporation has completed a wind turbine project at its Ottawa, OH plant. The $13.5 million project is expected to generate 1.5 megawatts of electricity and offset 34% of energy needs at the facility.

Schneider Electric, the global specialist in energy management and automation, today announced that it has extended relief efforts to those affected by Hurricane Maria by donating APC by Schneider Electric Mobiya TS170 S portable LED lighting systems to the Light and Hope for Puerto Rico campaign. The solar lanterns will provide citizens with temporary lighting and power to charge mobile devices as the grid continues undergo repairs in the wake of the storm.
