5 Questions with Justin Whitmore
It’s Earth Month and to celebrate, we’re reflecting on the progress we’ve made, the challenges we’ve faced and the road ahead. Throughout the month we’ll offer opportunities to hear directly from our leaders in animal well-being, the environment, workplace safety, hunger relief and more. Part of being a company committed to sustainability is being a company that also cares about transparency.

Our 2017 sustainability report is out today, the perfect time to turn to our Executive Vice President of Corporate Strategy & Chief Sustainability Officer Justin Whitmore to set the stage for our month-long dialogue on sustainability.
Tyson Foods Sets Two Million Acre Land Stewardship Target
Tyson Foods, Inc. has committed to support improved environmental practices on two million acres of corn by the end of 2020. It is the largest-ever land stewardship commitment by a U.S. protein company and supports Tyson Foods’ recently announced goal of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 30 percent by 2030.

The two million acre commitment, which was announced today as part of the release of Tyson Foods’ newest sustainability report, will encourage grain farmers to adopt more efficient fertilizer practices, and take additional measures to reduce water runoff and soil loss.
Xylem Volunteers Build Homes in Houston After Hurricane Harvey
Last year, Hurricane Harvey caused widespread devastation, forcing thousands of people out of damaged homes in Texas. In December, 25 Xylem employees volunteered with Houston Habitat for Humanity, rebuilding homes that had suffered from flooding and water damage in the wake of the hurricane.
Cerro Negro Local Entrepreneurs Contest
In late 2017, Goldcorp’s Cerro Negro mine in Perito Moreno, Argentina, helped develop a “Local Entrepreneurs Contest” together with Fundación Iniciativa and the city hall.

A workshop on business ventures launched the contest and provided the participants with the opportunity to acquire tools to further develop their new ventures. They were offered training and financing.

The month-long contest received a total of twenty-three applications, from which eight winners were selected. The assessment criteria included innovation of the products or services offered, management experience, sustainability considerations in areas such as social and environmental impact, safety, and return on investment potential.
Weakening Fuel Efficiency and Emissions Standards is Bad for Economy, Auto Industry
In response to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announcement today that current vehicle fuel economy and emission standards need to be weakened, Carol Lee Rawn, director of transportation at Ceres, which works with influential investors and Fortune 500 companies on sustainability issues, stated, “Major investors and businesses understand that rolling back the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) and emissions standards will undermine the global competitiveness of the U.S. auto industry at a time when the rest of the world is moving in the opposite direction, prioritizing clean vehicles and responding to consumer demand for cars that save them money.”
Building Authentic Partnerships with Local Communities
Building strong community relationships is key to Goldcorp’s vision of creating sustainable, enduring value for communities: value that lasts beyond the operating life of our mines.

Roger Souckey, Director of Sustainability & HR at Goldcorp’s Coffee project, located approximately 130 kilometres south of Dawson City, Yukon, and the entire Coffee team, have been strengthening connections with local First Nation and community groups since the project was acquired in 2016. “We’re committed to establishing meaningful partnerships with governments, organizations and individuals, and supporting community development activities – all of which we hope will make a lasting, positive impact and bring Goldcorp’s vision for our Coffee project to life.”
Kernels of Transparency: Sustainably Sourcing Corn
We know consumers are increasingly interested in where their food comes from and how it is grown. We share consumers’ desire for transparency about what goes into our products. For that reason, we made a commitment in 2013 to sustainably source our top ten priority ingredients by 2020.

Today, we sustainably source 67 percent of the dry-milled corn we purchase in the U.S. and are on track to meet our goal of 100 percent by 2020.

In addition to providing greater transparency, we are also driven by our company’s pursuit to treat the world with care. Working with our suppliers and the farmers who grow corn and other priority ingredients, we are focused on reducing the environmental impact of agriculture.
Keeping Siblings Together in Foster Care. It Matters…A LOT
This guest blog was written by Rachel Adler, a Wendy’s Wonderful Kids recruiter in Northwest, Ohio. She works diligently to get to know each child, giving them an opportunity to let their voice be heard throughout the adoption process. It was originally shared in April 2017. We are republishing it in honor of National Siblings Day. The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption works on behalf of the children who have waited the longest in foster care for a loving home. We focus on older children, sibling groups and children with special needs. Rachel shares how she fought to keep a pair of brothers together in a system that tried to pull them apart.
